Child Support Calculator

Estimate monthly child support payments based on both parents' incomes, number of children, and custody arrangement. General estimate for planning purposes.

Child support calculations vary by state. Most states use either the Income Shares Model (both parents' incomes) or the Percentage of Income Model (paying parent's income only). This calculator provides a general estimate — always consult a family law attorney for your state's specific guidelines.

Income Shares Model (most common)

The combined child support obligation is determined from a state guidelines table based on both parents' combined gross income and number of children. Each parent pays their proportional share based on their percentage of combined income. The non-custodial parent's share is paid to the custodial parent.

Factors that adjust the base calculation

  • Custody split: shared custody (50/50) significantly reduces or eliminates support
  • Health insurance: parent paying premiums often receives credit
  • Childcare: work-related childcare costs are added to the support obligation
  • Extraordinary expenses: private school tuition, medical expenses not covered by insurance

Modifying a child support order

Support orders can be modified if there is a significant change in circumstances — typically a 10–15% change in income, a change in custody, or a change in the child's needs. Contact a family law attorney or your state's child support enforcement agency to request a modification.
