Storage manufacturers often use decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) while operating systems use binary (1 KB = 1,024 bytes). This is why a "500 GB" drive shows as ~465 GB on your computer. For network speeds, bits per second (bps) are standard — a 100 Mbps connection transfers about 12.5 MB per second because there are 8 bits in a byte.
