Grade Calculator: How to Track and Project Your Course Grade
Course grades are usually a weighted average of different components — homework, quizzes, midterms, and a final exam. Understanding how each component is weighted lets you calculate your current standing and figure out exactly what score you need on the final to hit your target grade.
Calculating a weighted average grade
Multiply each component score by its weight and sum the results. If homework is 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 30%, and final 30%, and you scored 90, 85, and 78 on the first three, your pre-final total is (90×0.20)+(85×0.20)+(78×0.30) = 18+17+23.4 = 58.4 points out of 70. Your current average is 58.4/0.70 = 83.4%.
What you need on the final
To find the required final exam score, use: Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Points) / Final Weight. If you want an 85% overall and have 58.4 out of 70 points so far, you need 85 − 58.4 = 26.6 more points from a component worth 30 points: 26.6/0.30 = 88.7% on the final.
Using the grade calculator
Enter each assignment or category with its score and weight. The calculator shows your current course grade, the maximum possible grade even if you ace the final, and the minimum score you need on the final to achieve your target — a clear picture of your situation before finals week.
