Calculate powers and exponents. Includes powers of 2 table. Free online power (exponent) calculator.
Calculate any base raised to any exponent. Enter the base and exponent — both can be decimals or negatives — and get the result instantly. The powers-of-2 table is especially useful for computer science and digital memory reference.
2⁵ means 2 multiplied by itself 5 times: 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32. The base (2) is the number being multiplied, and the exponent (5) is how many times. Negative exponents mean reciprocals: 2⁻³ = 1 ÷ 2³ = 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125. A zero exponent always equals 1, no matter the base (except 0⁰, which is undefined).
Memory sizes, file sizes, and data transfer speeds in computing are almost always expressed in powers of 2. 2¹⁰ = 1,024 ≈ 1 kilobyte. 2²⁰ = 1,048,576 ≈ 1 megabyte. 2³⁰ ≈ 1 gigabyte. When someone says a hard drive has 256 GB or a RAM stick is 8 GB, those numbers trace back to powers of 2.
Knowing powers of 2 up to 2¹⁶ or 2²⁰ is genuinely useful for anyone doing systems programming, database design, or network engineering. The table on this page goes up to 2³² and beyond.
